Start with your travel needs

Is timeshare ownership right for you?

Content reviewed October 23, 2026

A timeshare is a vacation ownership or use arrangement with specific rights and continuing obligations. It is not a promise of investment return, inexpensive travel in every situation or a guaranteed future resale.

Check your travel fit

Think about where and when you travel, the accommodation you need and how early you can book. Consider years when you might not travel. Compare renting a similar stay under realistic dates and cancellation terms.

Know what you would own

A deeded interest, a right-to-use contract and a points-based product can operate differently. Points can sit on top of different legal structures. Ask about the home resort or collection, season, use frequency, available balance and contract term.

Budget for continuing costs

Separate the acquisition and closing quote from recurring maintenance, taxes, assessments, dues and usage charges. A low asking price does not show the full ongoing budget. Costs and your travel needs can change; no standard saving or break-even percentage is assumed.

Check the rights that transfer

Developer membership benefits, hotel loyalty options, elite status and exchange access may be restricted on resale. Ask the responsible administrator to confirm the rules for the particular interest in writing.
