Buying
Buying direct versus buying a timeshare resale
A timeshare resale and a direct developer purchase can differ in both price and rights. Compare specific offers using the same travel requirements, then separate accommodation access from benefits that depend on the purchase channel.
Build a direct-versus-resale comparison
- Match the legal product, unit or allocation, season and use frequency first.
- List the booking rights you would actually use in each offer.
- Put conditional status, conversions and extra programs in a separate row.
- Compare first-year and ongoing costs without assuming a future resale value.
Compare like with like
- Match resort, unit size, season, points and use frequency.
- Check whether available points or reservations are included.
- Separate purchase price and financing from recurring ownership expenses.
- Use written quotes for transfer/closing charges and actual current recurring bills.
Benefits can differ
A resale purchase may exclude status credits, loyalty conversions, special booking privileges or other developer programs. Even existing owners should ask whether an additional resale interest combines with their current account or remains subject to separate rules.
Avoid a guaranteed savings claim
An asking-price difference is not the same as a lifetime saving. Travel patterns, available reservations, financing, fee changes and alternatives all affect the comparison. Ask the team to explain the facts for the actual interest.
| Compare | Direct offer | Resale interest |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Identify the legal product | Match the exact legal interest |
| Reservations | Confirm the advertised rights | Confirm rights after the transfer |
| Extras | List conditional membership benefits | Check purchase-source restrictions |
| Budget | Obtain a written purchase quote | Obtain a written transfer quote |
A useful follow-up question
Is a lower resale asking price the same as guaranteed savings?
No. It describes one acquisition figure. Financing, continuing charges, usable reservations and benefits may differ. Decide whether the exact rights and total obligations meet your needs rather than relying on a standard savings percentage.
