Unexpected timeshare calls: verify before acting
An unexpected caller who knows your resort name has not proved that they represent a real buyer or a trusted provider. Pause the conversation, collect the claim in writing and verify the business through independently obtained contact information.
Make a verification record before responding
- Record the caller’s claimed legal business name and the exact service offered.
- Keep the message, payment request and any claimed deadline.
- Check a resort or closing-company claim using its independently found official contact.
- Confirm changed payment instructions with a trusted known person before sending funds.
Pause and verify independently
Ask for the legal business name, contact details and written service description. Use independently obtained official contact information to check resort, closing-company or government claims; do not rely only on a number supplied in the call.
Check money and deadline claims
Be cautious about a guaranteed buyer, guaranteed return or urgent request to pay taxes, processing charges or closing money to release proceeds. Obtain the proposed agreement and all charges in writing before making a decision.
Protect account information
Do not share passwords, verification codes, account numbers or identity documents in response to an unexpected request. Confirm changed payment instructions with a trusted known contact.
If something seems wrong
Save the messages and transaction records. Contact the relevant provider through an official channel and consider reporting the concern to the appropriate consumer-protection authority. An allegation in an old article does not establish a company’s current status.
A useful follow-up question
What if I have already shared information or paid?
Keep the records and contact the relevant financial or service provider through a trusted channel. Use the FTC reporting and consumer-information links to organize the concern. An old news headline alone does not establish the caller’s identity or current business status.
